Hundred Nights, hundred years libretto is inspired by Noah Play Sotoba Komachi, one of six stories of the “Rōjo-mono (Old Women)” category, that all focus on “aging”.
The story explains profound philosophy of Buddhism, through the life story of Sotoba Komachi who is said to have lived sometime around the middle of 9th century to early 10th century in the Heian period of Japan (794-1192) and was a famed poet.
Now an old women Komachi reveals abouth her youth and 100 night courtship of her late lover Fukakusa-no-Shōshō whose vengeful spirit posseses her to the day.
