Those who seek the greatest mystery of all always end up – with life itself. Dunja Jocić explores this spiritual dimension of “being alive” with her new work for the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS, which premiered on March 1, 2023, as part of the anniversary programme 15 YEARS ALIVE. For the Serbian-Dutch choreographer, the way to achieve this higher understanding of life is through ritual. Consequently, ritual patterns run through the whole piece – a mesmerising, extraordinarily atmospheric exercise that, from the very beginning, casts a spell over dancers and audiences alike. The music to match is provided by Jocić’s long-standing „house composer“ Renger Koning. The sound mixture of claves, bells and Greek Orthodox vocal passages (hence, by the way, the title Ayda) evokes a deeply concentrated, meditative mood. A strong focus that carried the splendid young dancers through the creation process and permeates the finished choreography down to the last movements.
